Celebrate Chinese New Year in 2016 with an evening walk carrying Chinese lanterns around the harbour foreshore to Light up Newcastle.
Lanterns will be for sale from 4-8pm at harbourside locations indicated on the map.
You can buy your lantern at Nobbys Lighthouse and join the Hunter School of Performing Arts marching band on a walk to Honeysuckle that leaves Nobbys at 5.00pm.
Or buy a lantern from the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club and walk with the Marching Koalas to Honeysuckle from the Figtree Park at Wickham at 5.30pm.
The lantern walks will converge on the Maritime Centre in Harbour Square at Honeysuckle for a short official ceremony and lion dancing at 7pm.
Or you can buy a lantern at one of the stalls along the harbour walk and around the Honeysuckle Precinct (see map).
As people walk with lighted lanterns at sun set we hope this will form a snake along the waterfront of Newcastle harbour and “Light up Newcastle”.
Lanterns can be pre-purchased (no credit card facilities) during January and February from The Seafarers Centre at Wickham, the Maritime Centre at Honeysuckle, and designated Rotary Clubs.
Official Opening Ceremony
A short official ceremony will be held outside the Maritime Centre at 7pm involving dignitaries and sponsors. VIPs and Sponsors will be involved in the ceremonial eye-doting ceremony to wake up the Lion dancers to herald in good luck for the New Year.
Entertainment & Other Activities
Around the Honeysuckle Precinct you will find Chinese lion dancers, dragons, dancers, musicians, singers, marching bands, choirs and much more to entertain you. See the timetable for key activities you want to see.
The main entertainment stage will be near the Maritime Centre and other groups will provide entertainment near the Honeysuckle Hotel.

The Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club yachts and boats will sail past between 7-8pm and carry lanterns to form a channel of boats to “Light up Newcastle” from the harbour. The local tugs and ferry will also carry lanterns and the tugs will perform a water ballet around 6pm.
