Don’t miss the 2016 Light up Newcastle Lantern Walk

Help our local Rotary Clubs raise money for the Mission to Seafarers and the Newcastle Maritime Centre

The Newcastle Rotary Clubs invite you to join in a special event to celebrate Chinese New Year and Light up Newcastle with red lanterns.

We invite you to take part in the Lantern Walk during Chinese New Year on the evening of Saturday 13 February 2016.

The Lantern Walk had its origin in the 2015 Rotary International theme of “Light up Rotary”. The challenge set this year is to “Be a gift to the world” and our Rotary Clubs will provide a gift to the seafarers visiting the Port of Newcastle and the maritime heritage of our City.

Rotary Clubs undertake activities to support their local community and the recipient of funds raised from the sale of lanterns at this year’s Light up Newcastle Lantern Walk will benefit the Newcastle Mission to Seafarers and Newcastle Maritime Centre.

The Mission assists sailors visiting the Port of Newcastle with a ‘home away from home’ at the Seafarers Centre at Wickham. Currently over 40,000 seafarers visit the Port of Newcastle and over 13,000 use the services offered by the Mission each year, with transport to the Centre, shopping, banking, healthcare and social and spiritual support. The 2016 lantern walk will raise money for a new upgrade to the kitchen at the Seafarers Centre.

Newcastle’s Maritime Centre will also be a beneficairy of the 2016 event. Money raised will assist the organisation build a new entrance to its new public cafe on the harbour foreshore. The Newcastle City Council and Hunter Development Corporation has supported the event and it will be part of the summer tourism campaign “of fun and festivities at Honeysuckle”.
